Young couple, lots of energy and shared dreams. About future family life, children playing in the garden, long summer dinners with friends by the fire, outdoor sports. The decision to leave the center of Prague and build their first shared home.
During discussions about the design brief, it turned out that, in addition to quite typical requirements (bedroom, study, two children's rooms, a garden allowing for active leisure), an important wish was also an outdoor sauna.
The site of their new home became a satellite area high on the slope above Radotín and the Berounka Valley. However, the flat corner plot surrounded by heterogeneous sprawling neighboring buildings did not offer much privacy for placing the outdoor sauna. Thus, one of the defining motives for the design of the house became the creation of an outdoor space for relaxation after sauna sessions, protected from the eyes of neighbors.
The house is positioned parallel to the street so that the southwest part of the plot behind the house can serve as a peaceful garden. Within the valid regulations of the area, the house is designed as close as possible to the northern building line. It maximally utilizes the allowable width of the buildable area, while the depth of the house is minimized with respect to the garden. All living rooms of the house are oriented towards the garden with large square windows. The study and the communal space with the kitchen on the ground floor have direct access to the garden. The adjacent garden terrace with outdoor dining can be shaded by a cassette awning recessed flush with the facade.
On the first floor – the private part of the house - are the children's rooms, the parents' bedroom, and bathrooms. From the large parents' bathroom, there is access to an outdoor relaxation area with a sauna and an outdoor shower. This relaxation oasis is defined by a steel supporting structure set on the garage roof. The tubular structure is exposed in its lower part, while the upper part is clad in larch boards. The relaxation area is connected to the viewing terrace on the roof of the house by an outdoor staircase. Here, one can gaze across the roofs of the neighbors and look far beyond the borders of tight suburban life, all the way to the Berounka, to the Hřebeny, to the horizon. Or in the evening, one can take a moment to admire the illuminated pulsating Prague in the distance and then return down the stairs to the embrace of a peaceful home.
The façade of the house is ventilated with an exposed facing brickwork. The subtle relief of the light brick and the larch cladding of the sauna give texture to the simply shaped house, which is currently somewhat lacking in the nearby surroundings.
System Recovery Architects are the authors of the design of the house with a sauna on the roof. The ground floor, garden, and interior furnishings were already resolved by the investors themselves.
