Skyscrapers have always been a showcase of power. What has changed over time are their additional meanings. Historically, they represented construction progress in architecture; later, the social and ecological impact of these buildings began to play a significant role, and currently, the question of most skyscrapers revolves solely around their façade. Countries with the greatest tradition in building high-rises, after the experiences from September 11, 2001, are returning to the first two points mentioned, and the third follows naturally.
Nouvel speaks of his skyscrapers: “What is interesting about skyscrapers is their weight: it's whether the viewer perceives the tower as built from steel, stone, or brick, or feels its mass. I like how skyscrapers slightly disdain the laws of the materiality of things. It is purely symbolic and, of course, it has to do with illusion as well. When you look at Tour sans Fins from a certain distance, you no longer really know what it is made of; it’s difficult to grasp its essence. Or Dentsu Tower, the white printed façade demands that one questions the accuracy of the sketch and construction. In reality, I also enjoy playing with the paradox between massiveness and fragility. The tower I built does not exhibit strength as its fundamental principle, but rather introduces questions about its structural system, the nature of the envelope, and the inner spaces. High-rise buildings have been constructed in cities since time immemorial, and their presence enriches the city in terms of poetry and urban composition. Additionally, skyscrapers pose questions about the relationship between light and mass, just as their primary structure can embrace aesthetic essence.”
