Chiswick Park is a collection of modern administrative buildings located in the western suburbs of London. The complex was built on the site of the former facilities of the London transport bus company, which was demolished in the 1980s. The investor decided to construct a large complex of a new business center on the resulting brownfields. A total of 12 administrative buildings were designed, the lowest having 5 floors, and the highest having 12 floors. The complex also includes an underground shopping arcade. The construction was planned in three main phases. Overall, the area covers approximately 13 hectares and has around 1,400,000 m² of leasable office space. Chiswick Business Park is located just about 8 km from central London and approximately 13 km from Heathrow International Airport.
The operation concept of the complex is based 75% on pedestrian traffic combined with public transportation. The area is accessible via shuttle bus, train, or there are facilities for cyclists. Car traffic is literally pushed to the periphery. Park-and-ride facilities are located around the perimeter of the complex, or parking is available in underground garages. The main access to the buildings primarily faces pleasant park environments.
The concept of greenery in Chiswick Business Park is divided into two main levels. One part is the so-called inner garden, while the second part is the so-called outer garden. The inner garden is designed as the main focal point of the entire complex. It is intended as a quiet and relaxing space for all users. The central feature of the inner garden is a large lake with a three-meter-high waterfall. Near the waterfall are the main recreational areas, which utilize the waterfall as a natural sound backdrop and a source of pleasant microclimate. The recreational areas, similar to the main paths, are designed from wooden decks, creating a kind of wooden spider leading through the complex to the individual buildings. In places where it is necessary to cross the lake's surface, the deck paths transform into arched wooden bridges. In many places, the decks expand into multi-level terraces and resting stairs. The network of wooden paths is complemented by paths made of crushed stone and paved surfaces. The banks of the lake are built of stone, and two large stones near the waterfall along with the aforementioned recreational areas are used as standalone sculptures replacing statues.
The design of the entire green project is contrasted with the strict high-tech architecture of the administrative buildings, being designed very naturally and organically. Emphasis is placed on detail, creating bizarre curved lines of individual wooden deck boards and entire sets of stairs, which all contribute to the impression of some sort of 'natural chaos.' The greenery attracts attention throughout the year and seems to wildly occupy every piece of the park. Water lilies appear on the surface of the lake, there is designed coastal greenery, large grassy areas, and a rich use of coniferous and evergreen plants. From the center, it spreads like green fingers into the area of the outer garden, which mainly accommodates parking and technical facilities of the complex. Here, it is created with calm soft lines flowing freely into the surrounding landscape.
Chiswick Business Park was built as an organic and living place, aiming to enhance the performance and work of employees by improving the working environment. The complex has received numerous awards, including the BALI National Landscaping Award 2002, the RIBA Award 2003, and the OAS Best Speculative Building Outside Central London 2006.
