The residential building “Rheinresidenz” is located in the Sankt Alban district on the eastern edge of Basel. The exclusive plot, in close proximity to the medieval walls, is situated on the site of a former battery factory. The winning project emerged from a competition held in 2001, which was won by the design of Zurich architects Barbara Neff and Bettina Neumann. The authors of the new residential building aimed for a natural integration into the diverse mosaic of structures from different time periods. The property also houses the villa of the original factory owner, which has been carefully restored. The newly designed 100-meter long four-story building runs parallel to the city walls. The house is divided into five parts with separate entrances, featuring eight apartments (two apartments per floor). All 39 apartments, in addition to balconies overlooking the historic walls, also have atriums illuminating the interior layout.
